Short film about peatland restoration in Scotland’s Western Isles
By - Richard - 17th April 2026
The Carloway Estate is a community landowner on the Isle of Lewis. The estate covers 11,500 acres on the island’s north west coast, with over 200 crofts spread across the island.
With support and funding from Peatland ACTION the estate has already put 450 hectares of its damaged peatlands on the road to recovery. And recently the Trust has been working with local crofters near Breasclete to restore an area of their peatland. They have also worked with Peatland ACTION to use the project as a way to train more local contractors and young people keen to get into the industry. With an estimated 300,000 hectares of land in need of restoration across the Western Isles it’s vital to grow the workforce to be able to carry out the work.
