Edinburgh Half Marathon attempt after 12 months out injured

By - Richard - 11th June 2022

16 months ago I experienced the worst injury I’ve ever had. A freak running accident caused serious ligament damage to my left foot.

For the whole of the next year I wasn’t able to run or play football. It was during this time that I became aware of how important running was to me. I’m just not as happy as when I’m able to lace up my running shoes and get outside.

But with rehab and strength training, I was able to build my foot back up to a point where I felt strong enough to try running again. A full 12 months later.

Hesitantly I signed up for the Edinburgh Half Marathon. I had no idea whether or not I would be able to take part, but it felt important to have something to aim for.

This video documents my journey from running injury through to standing on the start line of the Edinburgh Half Marathon and the race itself. Filled with trepidation, I had no idea whether taking part in this running race was remotely possible.

Three years prior to this, I experienced one of those rare, genuinely life-changing moments. 385 yard short of the Edinburgh Marathon finish line I hit the wall. Embarrassingly I collapsed over the finish line in a ball of pure emotion. It was my first running race at the age of 40 and I learnt so much about myself. It was time to go again.

I hope that this video serves as inspiration to anyone who is experiencing or has experienced a serious injury. Never give up!
